Just the ticket
Used in Toyota Prius where backup view is terrible. This camera works terrific. Wiring was very easy to understand but a little tough to figure route on the back of the lifting door of my Prius. I routed the wire from the license plate camera to under the external trim then under the sealing trim on the back of the lifting rear door. Made a coil where the camera wire exited at the top of the door and ran the wire down to the back up light for the camera turn on power. The small coil of wire prevents stressing the camera wire to its breaking point by bending it back and forth when opening the door. I Velcroed the transmitter to the rear cabin wall. The color camera and big monitor provides great view behind car – even at night.

I used velcro on the back of the monitor and placed a strip under the car radio so I could easily remove it when I wanted because I didn’t want to place it on top of dash with the supplied mounting gear using double stick tape.

One note on operation: being wireless, the monitor will sometimes activate when driving past structures with security systems with strong wireless signals, like banks. Some establishments even use security cameras where pictures show up on the backup monitor when you’re close to the building. At night this can be distracting until you get used to it. The monitor does have a manual mode if the rare turn ons are annoying, or you can pull the monitor off the velcro support and place it under the console or simply unplug it.

Final bit of info is if possible, plug the monitor into a cigarette jack that has its power off when the keys are turned off. Most of my cars operate like this so no problem here. The monitor draws a tiny current in the off mode – like 10mA which is not very much but if your car is not driven for long periods, or your battery is already weak, it can discharge your battery.

Awesome Unit
The Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter is an awesome unit. It started a hard starting truck in four degree weather on two separate occasions. This vehicle is our son’s with a 2000 watt amp for stereo system. My husband ran a mini air compressor off of the DC outlet for airing up tires on our boat trailer and camper and it performed much better than plugging it into the cigarette lighter of the vehicle (with it running). As far as the AC outlet, I will update this review after trying that option. I would recommend this item to anyone looking to purchase this type of unit. Looking forward to warmer weather to try it out at the camp site. Also received the unit in about three days from Amazon. Great service as always.

Great piece of gear to have in your vehicle…
This is a great piece of gear to have in your vehicle. I leave it in the back of the truck and it’s always being charged by the cigarette lighter when the truck is on the road. I’ve used the 12V power output, and the inverter for AC power a few times. As a test, I ran a 17″ macbook pro for 1.5 hours!!! It has an AM/FM radio with an ipod input and a USB charger too. The USB charger can run other USB devices like fans, a light, etc… The speaker is not great, but it’s good enough to listen to podcasts while working around the garage.

The compressor just came in handy for a tire that was low on my wife’s car. I haven’t used the jumper cables yet, but I’m sure if someone asks me for a jump start and I pull this thing out, they will be buying one of these units of of Amazon the next morning. The Amazon price was $106 US delivered. At that price, I think everyone should have one of these in their car and maybe another one in their garage. The compressor comes with a “pin” for blowing up basketballs or footballs.

I added a package of 15amp fuses in the compartment where the air hose lives for backups to the built in fuse in the unit. The unit also has an LED worklight that could come in handy in a pinch. My only wish for this item would be that if it had a small lid on the top that allowed access to a tool area for screw drivers or pliers, fuses, spare keys, etc…

Everything for a home theater control and more!
So you want a home theater. Your wife says yes if you can hide that hideous stack of black boxes. Sounds simple. This remote makes it very simple. I shopped the competition’s options from Monster to the massive home theater controllers. Since my budget was not $500-$1500, I had to avoid the big controllers. It was between Monster’s and Universal’s.

Most of my components were in the “code list” and worked perfectly with just the code. My TiVO/DirecTV was the exception. The TiVO code only made the TiVO work and the SAT code only made that part work. I used the learning capability on the remote and even though I had to program every button, it was fast and painless.

The RF features of the remote work perfectly also. I have my components in a cedar closet about 20 feet from my projector and couch. It goes through the walls fine. The Powerblaster that transmits the IR signal in the closet is not even facing the components and works due to the high IR signal it outputs.

The macros for turning everything on/changing the input on the projector are also easy to program and work very well. For the $100 I paid for this, it was a steal. There is no way the Monster counterpart gives enough additional functionality to warrant the high price. I highly recommend the product and the company.

Logitech Harmony 510 Advanced Universal Remote Control Review

Good Looking, Affordable, and programs easily:

This remote is sleek looking, though it is hard to tell from the pictures. It fits very nicely in the hand and works as advertised. The programming is the easiest it has ever been. All you need is your component model numbers and which input your devices are connected to, the software will do the rest. All you do is answer questions and the software guides you through the programming. I bought and programmed 2 harmony remotes; Harmony One (6 components) and this 510 (3 components). The programming software worked flawlessly each time. Unless you are completely clueless about your system, you should be able to program this, no problem. Gone are the days of programming by a series of pressing and holding certain buttons.

Four Customizable Color buttons

This remote is unique in that it has the four colored buttons at the bottom that will control whatever you like. For example I like to us the “Sleep” function at night on my tv, so I program it to one of these. Or if you have unique buttons on your Cable DVR like “Live TV” or “My DVR” or “Prev/Last” on your TV. You can program any botton, it will even let the 510 learn it from an existing remote if necessary.

Harmony 510 vs Harmony One

If you want your main activities buttons or these extra buttons on your remote in a touch screen get the Harmony One, if not this is a very affordable alternative and does virtually ever function, just without the touch screen. It is also sometimes easier and takes up less room to not have to worry about a charger (ie One). YOu shouldn’t to change batteries maybe once a year, twice at most.

Help/Troubleshoot Feature:

Another awesome feature is the help. Lets say you are using your remote and something doesn’t turn off or on, just hit the Help button, it will ask you questions until it fixes the problem, very cool.

Marriage Saver
No more fighting with your spouse when you hitch up the trailer. I think my wife actually gets some perverse satisfaction out of our hitching sessions. That makes one of us. So when she steps back into the house to grab a jacket (or whatever that “one more thing” is that keeps us from leaving), I quickly snap the magnetic camera onto the tailgate and hitch up the trailer before she makes it back outside.

Yes, it’s that fast.

The image quality is great. The display is very clear. You can even reverse the picture to correct for the “my left or the camera’s left?” challenge. My only complaint is that there is a little static as you get farther away from the camera (or if the charge is low).

I bought this camera for a specific reason (not to avoid the hitching wars with my wife, because that’s actually kind of fun–kind of). The spaces in my RV storage yard are very close together and I have a very bad blind spot on the curb-side of the trailer. This happens to be the side that swings wide when I pull out of my space. One time the rear corner of my trailer hit the mirror of the RV parked next to me. So I bought this camera in hopes of correcting that blind spot.

Although my awning arms are aluminium, there’s just enough metal hardware for the camera’s magnet to stick to. Then as I’m pulling out of my space (or backing in), I can see how close I’m getting to my neighbor’s RV. The picture quality isn’t great at that distance, but it’s still good enough to help me avoid any more close calls.

I kind of doubt the claim of 300′ range. Mine has never worked at even half that distance. I’m lucky to get a signal from the rear end of my 30′ trailer, but I’m sure there’s a big difference between unobstructed line of sight coverage and bouncing the signal around my trailer and over the bed of my truck (probably about 40′). Honestly though, there’s slight signal loss just from sticking it on my tailgate ten feet away.

Anyway, I’m very happy with the product. It’s not cheap, but it’s a lot cheaper than buying another mirror for my neighbor’s RV.

Great system!
We purchased this system a couple of months ago for our motorhome. We just got home from a trip and loved it! Shipping was very fast. I broke a little piece off the monitor stand and they shipped a new one out the same day at no charge. Very nice people. Very easy to install. I installed the wiring under the motorhome while my husband installed the camera and hooked up the power supply. Our rearview mirror inside the motorhome is useless so we intalled the monitor above the mirror and leave the camera on the whole time we are travelling and use it as a rearview mirror. Now we can see our towed vehicle and all the traffic behind us. It eliminates all blind spots. It is just awesome! We feel much more confident now travelling with this camera/monitor system. It works great at night too. We highly recommend this system.

Ergotron LX Desk Mount Arm – mounting kit Review

Well built and strong
I bought this to support a heavy 24″ Acer monitor. I have clients that come to my office and I was thinking that it would be nice to easily rotate the screen so that they could also see it. Since then, though, I’ve found that the real benefit of the Ergotron LX is the ability to exactly position my screen where I can see it the best….about a foot above my desk and at the exact focal point of my reading glasses. No more leaning forward and end-of-day neck aches!

The quality of construction is excellent…this thing is almost completely metal. Although it’s at the very edge of the specs, it has no problem supporting a 20lb monitor (and I suspect that the weight limit is more due to the strength of the internal springs than anything else). The arm shipped with two different mounting systems. One, a heavy duty desk-edge clamp, would probably have worked fine, but I opted to use the other one – a 5/16″ bolt passing through a hole drilled in the desktop. Using the bolt allows the screen to be moved to any position without worrying about the clamp coming loose…there’s a lot of rotational force exerted by a heavy monitor hanging out on a long arm.

Long and short of it…the Ergotron LX is terrific. I should have bought one years ago.

Update – November 2009 – I contacted Ergotron to purchase second arm. I wanted to upgrade to a dual-monitor setup, but unfortunately, the arms aren’t available for separate purchase. I appear to be stuck (Not nice, guys!), but, if you think you’ll need one in the future, you should look at the dual-arm versions today…
