I’ve had this MoKo Ultra Slim stand case for about a week now. You always wonder what you may get with a bargain case, but I must say that I’ve not been disappointed thus far. Installing your Note 8.0 tablet into the case couldn’t be easier. The molded plastic tabs on the corners and side snap around the edge of the tablet, holding it securely in place while also providing excellent protection. With the case on, you have easy access to all of the ports and buttons. A slim metal tab along the opening of the case serves as a magnetic closure. I would have preferred a better design here – perhaps having the metal/magnets embedded in the case – but that is a minor criticism. It does keep the cover securely closed, and the auto wake/sleep function works great. The outside of the case has a quality feel to it, while the microfiber finish of the inside provides great screen protection. There are 2 creases in the cover, which detract slightly from its looks, but they allow the cover to fold into a triangle that provides 2 viewing angles. I find using that to be just slightly awkward, but I think that is b/c it is still fairly new. With time, the creases should loosen a little and work better – again, a very minor criticism.

I do wish the pricing were a bit better on the non-black colors for the case. When I purchased mine, I paid nearly double to get the light blue case. However, given how much I saved with this case compared to many of the alternatives, I decided it was worth it to spend an extra $7 for a color I liked. I have the light blue, and it looks fantastic with my white tablet.

Better than the Samsung version, May 1, 2013

I owned the Samsung smart cover and returned that within two days. This cover is just as thin and light as the samsung version, but has a few advantages for a fraction of the price.

The Samsung cover could only be used as a stand in a single, low position that I hated. Because the Moko has a stronger magnet, it can be used in either a mostly flat or a mostly upright position.

One problem with these book covers is that they make the rear camera challenging to use (I use this tablet at work as well as home, so I like the rear camera for documenting things or capturing whiteboard contents). Again, because the Moko has a stronger magnet, it’s easier to fold the cover out of the way when you’re trying to use the camera. In fact, you can even use the folded cover as another place to hold the tablet when taking a picture.

This cover does not have the little cut out for the speaker on the GSM models, but it doesn’t sound like that model is coming to the US anyway.

As mentioned in my response to a question in the comments section, this cover does properly trigger the sleep/wake function, but I’ve never had it accidentally put the tablet to sleep. This was a constant problem with 3rd party accessories for my previous tablet.

    Two minor gripes:

    - There was a plastic sheeting on the little chrome name plate. This was attached underneath the nameplate and didn’t come off cleanly (it stretches before ripping), so it left some small bits of ugly plastic sticking out. A careful session with a very sharp razor blade and a steady hand fixed that. Hopefully I didn’t manage to actually cut through any of the vinyl.

    - When the cover is folded back, the tablet is slightly more difficult to hold with your left hand because the leather “hinge” doesn’t run the entire length of the case, so that causes the flap to slide around a bit in your hand. If you’re left handed, you’ll be right at home because it’s actually more comfortable to hold the case from the right side (I often use the tablet upside down because I find it easier to hit the buttons from the top when sitting in bed, and that fixes this problem as well).

Someone in another review mentioned that once you folded the case it doesn’t lay flat again. The thing about this case is that the cover can be folded in either direction and the magnet still works, so as long as you fold it in such a way that the cover curves inward, you shouldn’t have this problem. In either case, the magnet that keeps the case closed helps with this as well.

Overall it’s a great case at an amazing price (six bucks for black!). Easily the best value of any case I’ve ever purchased for any phone or tablet, and I’ve gone through a lot of them.

Perfect Fit for Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, July 29, 2013

    UPDATED REVIEW

After using this MoKo Ultra Slim case for about 10 days I would say that it is very well made and fits a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 like a glove. I still give it 5 stars. But three things made me uncomfortable with it:

    1. For my primary use of the tablet, e-reading using the splendid Aldiko app, I found that holding the tablet as an open book caused the cover to kind of cut into my (left) arm because it is thin and cardboard-like. The bottom is also hard, so the whole experience was not as pleasant as I had with my prior tablet and cover.

I also put my tablet on a glass-topped table when not using it and I was reluctant to do that with this cover since even if trying it was difficult to not “clunk” it down, there being no padding to speak of on the back.

    2. To open the cover you need to use your fingernail on the edge of the metal bracket that attaches to the magnets. You could be less gentle and use your finger but then I doubt that the cover would take too much of that.

By the way, these magnets are not the magnet that automatically wakes the tablet on opening the cover. Looking closely at the left edge of the cover you will see a slight bulge where that magnet is.

    3. Next to a reading lamp, I found that the shiny silver bracket that serves to hold the cover closed reflected the lamp a bit when held in a certain position. If you want to read without thinking about how to hold the tablet, you won’t like this.

But if these things would not concern you probably would love this cover. The talk at XDA Developers is that those guys love it, and that’s high praise from the most techie of users.

I am now trying this cover, which deals with the three issues above in a way that I think will be satisfactory.

I will say definitely, though, that I prefer either of these covers to the “frame” type cover for the reasons that I gave in my original review.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW

This case is a perfect fit for the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, and I appreciate the seller saying that it would be by email before I purchased it.

This type of case allows full access to the corners of the screen for swiping from the top, bottom and both sides. The tablet that I replaced (Nexus 7) was in an excellent Supcase where the tablet slides in a “leather” frame and is held in place by a hook-and-loop fastener. But because of its design it is quite difficult reach the sides of the screen and swipe in from any direction.

The case being reviewed here snaps into a plastic frame, which now that I’ve had both types I prefer for Samsung tablets. One reason is that I use an app called My Home Button that allows access to the home screen and recent apps without using the tablet’s home button.

The two best Android browsers, Dolphin and Boat, both have features accessed by swiping in from both sides (Dolphin) and the right side (Boat). With this case you can do that easily whereas with the other kind you cannot.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is only about three weeks old at the time of this writing and, as anyone who has searched for cases knows, there are very few available. Best Buy, Staples and Walmart have none right now. Samsung sells a case that costs $50 and appears to be almost identical to this one. (It has the same snap-in design.) From reports on the Internet the product may not even be shipping yet.

Even though I just received this case I’m writing the review to help people who are looking for a case that exactly fits a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

In addition I hope my comments on the two basic designs of book-like cases is helpful.

The tablet itself is a big improvement as an e-reader and email device over the Nexus 7 because of the 8 inch (versus 7 inch) screen, Samsung’s Reading Mode and the fact that Samsung’s email app has better readability and usability.
